Box Five aka Mary Bichner

Is a rather awesome musician that I know through Radiohead fandom. She is possibly the nicest person I’ve ever got to know online (we have rather silly chats whenever she has the time to pop online for more than 5 minutes). Her musical talents include Perfect Pitch (the ability to recognize notes and chords simply upon hearing them played) and synesthesia (a bizarre neurological condition which causes Mary to “see” splashes of color when she hears specific pitches sounded). I fell in love with her voice the moment I heard her bedroom demo’s (which I have floating about somewhere). It’s hard to pin her style down, she likes to call it classipop. As she likes to blend classical music and pop together to create music that is quite refreshing in today’s music world driven by pro tools and the auto tune plugin. Mozart and Thom Yorke seem to vie for position as her favourite musical hero, though I think Mozart edges it. I made a friend of mine go to Mary’s first gig in New York (seeing as I don’t like flying and keep procrastinating over saving money up so I can go see Mary perform live) -

Something I will treasure forever (well maybe not as much as my L lenses) -

BOX FIVE – “The Clear” (David Ivory Presents Showcase, 02/19/09)

You can Listen to Box Five’s album Leave the Earth Behind here. Mary also has an awesome blog called Rainbow Rockstar which details her many adventures in music. Including her work with the vitamin string quartet on a 30 Seconds to Mars MTV Unplugged show. I will return to my proper blogging tomorrow, for now I must go slay dragons in Skyrim.
